Twelth Issue, August 2008

  Dear members and friends,
It is always with pleasure that we inform you of good news and positive developments at our Centre, such as the Indian Government, namely the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and the Ministry of Urban Development having agreed to support the Centre for two of its key innovative projects: a market study of India's emerging urban markets and a web portal dedicated to foster city-level dialogue between Europeans and Indians.
Colette Mathur
Co-President
Besides, the World body United Cities and Local Governments based in Barcelona has agreed to create with us wide and vibrant networking among European and Indian cities and exchanging of expertise and experiences in all urban development areas. Together, we shall offer Indian cities the largest possible window on the World of cities and offer European cities a working access to India for their co-operative engagement.

As we all know, well organized and efficiently managed cities, with adequate services, are essential for a modern and dynamic society, for all its people, and, particularly for those who deserve a better live and dignity.

Today, Indian cities are undergoing major changes. The NURM encourages and allows them to undertake urgently needed reforms, infrastructure projects, improvement in governance and promote citizen involvement.

We, members of the Centre, are committed to contribute to the best of our capacities to the realization of this unique and very ambitious initiative. Our past successful achievements are indeed only a beginning, simply proving that we have an important and timely role to play in bridging existing gaps between Indians and Europeans in urban domains, while fostering a non-existent city-level dialogue.

We are convinced that with more experience, continued dedication of all my fellow-members and the Secretariat and with the enduring moral and financial support from those who have been sharing our dream and supporting our initiatives so far, we can make a real difference.

Looking forward to our members' wholehearted support and to new membership from our readers,

Colette Mathur,
Co-President
