Thirteenth Issue, October 2008

  Dear members and friends,

After Winter, Spring
Let the dust settle over the collapsed castle of cards that creative finance has become. Let doomsday sayers, witchcraft doctors and hapless politicians find the way out of the mess. Let us remain positive and look at what good may surface from the smouldering ashes of the Wall Street model of capitalism which allowed finance to prevail over the real economy and used over-indebtedness to fuel economic growth.

Gone with it is the irrepressible lure that this model exercised over the young Indian elite. Does old Europe not look more attractive and safer all of a sudden?
Michel Sabatier,
Secretary General
Will the crisis not accelerate the rise of India on World stage as a responsible global power? Will India not shine as a beacon of hope for Europeans in search of a large, still growing and largely crisis-resilient market and of a solid old time ally to reshape the World order together?

Will European unity not emerge stronger, as it may become obvious to all European governments that a country alone cannot fight a transatlantic tidal wave? Without a common €uro currency, Europe would have sunk. Has the time not come for a closer coordination of European economic policies and for setting a central financial regulatory authority to match the European Central Bank?

Amid din and furore, the Centre keeps forging ahead with its Euro-Indian co-operative endeavours at the grassroots level, where the real people toil and where the real economy lives on.

However minute it may look in the present World upheaval, we are proud to report that Ahmedabad, a partner of our last Goa Forum, signed two more co-operation agreements last week with Valladolid and Halle, both Forum partners too, and became the first Indian City to join the Centre as a member. So did Valladolid from Europe. Welcome to other Indian and European Cities, States and Regions to join the club!

We’d like to see these modest achievements as a little swallow that will make spring after financial winter is over.

Michel Sabatier,
Secretary General

If Indian industry is to become globally competitive, it is clear that small and medium enterprises (SMEs), which are the drivers of economic growth, must also be globally competitive.

  • Obituary :

  • We are sad to report the sudden demise of Jayant Bhuyan, Deputy Director of the Confederation of Indian Industry and     CEO of India Brand Equity Foundation. He was of a dear old friend to several of our members and a great supporter of     the EuroIndia Centre. It is largely thanks to him that CII and IBEF partnered our last Goa Forum. He will be missed.     We express our sincere condolences to his family.
