Jai ho, Dr Singh!
|
|
|
In their letter of congratulations to Dr Manmohan Singh on his historic re-election, Co-Presidents Colette Mathur and Jamshyd Godrej wrote: The impeccable and peaceful way in which elections have been conducted with such high popular participation has once again astonished the World. Europe in particular would dream to repeat the same feat in its impending elections. India can be legitimately proud of her democracy.
European elections have just concluded and the dream fell through: only 43.09% of a 375 million-strong electorate went to the polling booth as compared to 59.7% of a 714 million-strong electorate in India, with even more diversity in ethnic types, cultures, languages and scripts than in Europe.

At a time when Europe is groping in dim light for a renewed sense of unity and purpose, should she not call on the wisdom of Dr Singh for a political prescription?
Conversely, Dr Singh will be looking for a way to rekindle his reformist credentials, somewhat sullied by the opposition from the Left Parties during the previous five year term. Dr Singh will be looking to bring about a dynamic single Indian market, open to the best technology from the World and to more foreign investment, and bring more Indian citizens into the main economic stream in order to create sustainable growth for the country and political capital for his Party (Refer to the "Vantage point" for the pending reform agenda).
Could he not do with a European prescription for a common market? Isn't there a case for a parity exchange of experiences at the federal level between India and Europe that would benefit both?
In a modest way, our Centre hopes to contribute to this essential Euro-Indian dialogue at the local level of Cities, Regions and States, through two unique events organized in partnership with the Confederation of Indian Industry:
- The first EuroIndia City Summit in Valladolid (Spain) on 4-6 October
- A National Conference on Urban Security at the Taj Mahal hotel in Mumbai on 26-27 November
Both will facilitate the sharing of precious hard-earned European expertise. Both will be a public show of European solidarity with their Indian brethren, particularly the Mumbai conference: Let Euro-Indian amity have the last word against those nefarious people who deeply resent triumphant democracies, such as India's or Europe's.
Both paid a dear price for it. Let us together pay them back with the same democratic coin!
