Michel Sabatier, Secretary General, and Girish Bhagat, Secretary (India), have just
completed a tour of Indian States and cities , with the support of the local offices of the
Confederation of Indian Industry, our Indian partner, and invited them to attend the
EuroIndia City Summit of Valladolid (4-6 October) and its European extension to Brussels
(7 October) and Paris (8-9 October).

The outcome is very encouraging with 13 States and 18 cities having declared strong
interest, the tentative list of which is given below. Cities are all part of the Jawaharlal
Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission. They cover a broad and balanced geographical
spectrum with 6 cities from the South, 3 from the West, 7 from the North and 2 from the
East Their population ranges from 70000 (Panaji) to over 5 millions (Bangalore).
The India delegation will be led by the Secretary to the Government of India, Ministry of
Urban Development. The Union Secretary-led delegation will be accompanied by senior
State Government officials, most of them being responsible for Urban development
policies and project implementation for their respective States. Some of the cities will
be represented by Mayors and/or elected corporators and Municipal Commissioners.

Besides there will be representation from the European and Indian companies engaged in
the Urban Development in India stewarded by CII. Never before on the subject matter of
Urban Development, India has put forth such a formidable, divers multi-State
delegation. This is despite the fact that due to prevailing drought conditions in many
States, there are severe restrictions on foreign travel for public and elected officials.
