Dear Member, dear Reader
|
|
The second EuroIndia Forum concluded in Delhi on April 7th on a successful note. The Forum was organised in a masterly way by Mady Tissot and her colleagues at the Centre and colleagues from our partner, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). It yielded a very rich debate among European and Indian city stake-holders on a range of critical topics on which hinges the successful rejuvenation of urban India.
We were witness to the signing of the first MoU. between an Indian partner city, Ahmedabad, and a European partner-city, La Rochelle, on an institutional project of crucial importance for conserving the cultural and architectural heritage of Indian cities: the establishment of a world class training and learning institute.
|
The Government of India, once again, proved very supportive of the Forum and Partner-cities manifested a high degree of involvement. On the eve of the concluding day's events in Delhi, the honourable Prime Minister of India, Dr Manmohan Singh, our President Emeritus, received our Co-President Colette Mathur and expressed his unequivocal support for our city-focussed initiatives.
Co-President Colette Mathur and the Prime Minister of India, Dr Manmohan Singh, our President Emeritus
We are grateful for this repeat success to our partners- cities, companies and the CII, to the Government of India, to the European Commission and to our members who turned up in numbers to play a decisive role.
In the process, we registered the highest-ever quorum at our Annual General Meeting (AGM) , the first one on Indian soil, which saw key Forum protagonists being inducted onto the Board under the confirmed co-Presidency of Colette Mathur and Jamshyd Godrej.
Now, what's next? How to capitalise on our achievements to scale-up? How best to nurture the huge potential and meet the unprecedented challenges of India's urban revolution? How to bring all this into the ambit of a promising Euro-Indian co-operation?
At the Forum itself, our members and the CII, flagged off the brainstorming process to craft the next three-year strategy out of two definite conclusions that have emerged over the past one year :
1. To capitalise on the clear support expressed by the Government of India for our urban initiative, we must go beyond a yearly dedicated forum, line up a series of thematic activities in between and demonstrate an even more concrete outcome for Indian cities.
2. The success of the first tourism promotional event for European cities in Delhi revealed the potential of a EuroIndia Forum of cities encompassing additional dimensions that would bring more value to European cities, while they extend cooperation and offer free expertise to their Indian counterparts. That would require more activity, manpower and funding.
We need your ideas and support to achieve a quantum jump in our urban initiative. Then only can Europeans add their unique and time-tested flavour to India's urban revolution, a case for a new spice trade in reverse.
We'd like to invite you to take part in this process by sending your suggestions to me personally,

Thank you,
Michel Sabatier
